AMC: Synonymous with One of the Greatest American Cars

AMC, American Motors Corporation, an American automobile company came into existence on January 14, 1954. The company was formed when Nash-Kelvinator Corporation was merged with Hudson Motor Car Company. Valued at US$198 million, it was the largest corporate merger that had ever taken place in US till that time. According to the value of dollars in 2006, it would have been worth $1.44 billions!
Declining sales of AMC cars and fierce competition in the auto market of the United States forced the corporation to seek a French partner, Renault in the late 1970s. The partnership lasted till March, 1987. It was in 1987 that AMC was purchased by Chrysler Corporation and AMC and Renault ceased to exist as brand names in the United States. However, quite a few of the Eagle models and the Jeep line still continued.
AMC saw its hey day. The corporation had introduced AMX on February 24, 1968. A mid 1968 model, it joined the Ford Thunderbird and the Chevrolet Corvette as the only American two seat sports car. The AMX was a kind of a small sized AMC Javelin. Both Javelin and AMX enjoyed the reputation of being the best of the cars of the times.
AMX is still treated as one of the bold experiments by American Motors Corporation. Though it never competed directly with the Corvette, its considerable low price allowed it a strong hold over the market of the times.
There was no dearth of the enthusiasts who preferred AMX over other options as it did not disturb their budget. So, AMX did manage not only to maintain the already gained market but even to generate newer ones for who does not want quality at a low price? This explains why American Motors Corporations is a name still remembered.
