GMC – Predecessor of Trucks

The establishments of General Motors Company dates back to 1901. It was Max Grabowski who established a company called Rapid Motor Vehicle Company to build the worlds first ever commercial trucks. The trucks in those days had one cylinder engines. In 1909, General Motors Company purchased it and as a result, the trucks got the name GMC trucks. There are some unmemorable histories regarding these trucks.

In 1916, a GMC truck crossed two far away cities, from Seattle to New York city in thirty days. In 1926, a 2 ton GMC truck was driven from New York to San Francisco in 5 days and 30 minutes. During the Second World War II these trucks were in great demand. The US Army demanded something around 600,000 trucks, and they were provided.

The GMC also entered in the production of buses and purchased the Yellow Coach bus manufacturer company in 1943. In 1980’s when the company faced a tough competition from other subsidiary companies it stopped manufacturing buses. They later sold the bus models to Transportation Manufacturing Company. GMC is currently manufacturing SUVs, pickup trucks, vans, light duty trucks and medium duty trucks. The company also released a book named “The First 100 Years” to mark the completion of 100 years in truck manufacturing.

In US a GMC is usually sold in combination with Buick or Pontiac typically at lower volumes than the equivalent Chevrolet trucks. GMC trucks are more favored than Chevrolet trucks. The latest GMC model truck was released in the year 2007. The model is called Acadia a crossover of SUV. In 2009, GMC is going to bring two new models called “Terrain” and “Envoy”. These trucks will be fitted with latest technologies so that the customer can get the maximum advantages and the facilities.
