Maserati - Sports Cars and Racing Cars

Maserati, the Italian company indulged in producing sports cars and racing cars, besides Ferrari, Maclaren. Maserati were six brothers who were all involved in producing automobiles. Of these brothers Alfieri, Bindo, Ernesto used to build race cars for Diatto. But Diatto suspended the production of racing cars in 1926. This compelled Maserati brothers to make racing cars of 4, 6, 8 and 16 cylinder engines.

Maserati has a turnover of around 694 million pounds as said by the company sources, with around 700 employees presently working. The parent body of this company is Fiat S.P.A. It is a public sector company with production centre at Modena, Italy. The official trident emblem of this company was designed by an artist named Mario. The company has changed its ownership for a number of times. Maserati competes with Martin, Jaguar, Mercedes, BMW some of the best brands of automobiles in the market.

With the advent of Second World War, the manufacturing of cars was intervened. But in 1939 and 1940, Maserati 8CTF produced by the brothers won the Indianapolis 500. After the restoration of peace the brothers were engaged in producing the cars. This time Maserati brothers were joined by some well known engineers. They produced some high class racing cars like 4CLT, 8CLT etc. In 1957, Maserati retired from factory racing participation and continued to build cars for privateers but more focus on producing road cars.

Famous Argentinian driver Juan Fangio raced for a number of years in 1950. He won the World Championship in 1957 with Maserati 250F. Other famous racing drivers who worked with the Maserati Racing Projects were Toulo de Graffenried, Louis Chiron, Prince Bira, Enrico Plate and several others. With the oil crisis in 1973, the demand for the sports car dwindled. Maserati came at the verge of liquidation, but timely funding by the Italian Government infused life in the Maserati sports and racing car manufacturer.
