Mercury Motors – History of Achievements

Mercury Motors is a brand that was not popular among the masses for a long time. It had silent existence in the world of automobile market, though having position in producing high quality luxury cars. Founded in the year 1939, by Edsel Ford, son of Henry Ford. It has its production unit in Dearborn, Michigan in US. Actually, it is a division of Ford Motors. Mercury was intended to market the newly produced brand ‘Lincoln’ of Ford.

Mercury’s market in the seventies and eighties was not in a comfortable zone. The designers of cars were busy working with Ford and so could not devote quality time for Mercury. As a result, the company did not have good models to compete with the models of other car manufacturer. Its product was restricted to few good models. The product Cougar XR-7 was able to make a mark among the customers.

The initial logo of the car was the only brand name i.e. Mercury. The meaning implies ‘The Roman God Mercury’. Besides the company name, the logo contained wings extended outwards with signature bowl. In the fifties, the logo looked like “M” with parallel blocks leading outward from the undersurface of its perpendicular components in all direction. From late sixties to mid eighties the logo contained “Sign of the Cat”. Finally, the logo was fixed in the mid eighties which was extremely conventionalized letter “M”.

Mercury was engaged in producing and selling “near luxury” cars at the beginning. From those periods till date they have produced several luxury cars, very much popular among customers. To name some of the most popular luxury models cars made by Mercury are:

  1. Grand Marquis which is V8 full-size sedan, costs around $25,830 - $32,675.
  2. Sable is a V6 whole-size sedan, costs around $24,290 - $35,190.
  3. Mountaineer a middle sized SUV and costs around $28,105 - $42,255.

Other fine models include Mariner, Marine Hybrid – both of these models are Compact type SUV.
